Thanks to the pandemic, we’ve been doing a lot of local travel this past year. Our most frequently visited spots have been wineries near DC since they provided open spaces to maintain social distancing. In this blog post, we have put together all of our favorite wineries in Maryland, about an hour or less drive from DC.
By the way, let me add that none of our travels are complete without a visit to local wineries if there are some. Have you read our blog on Portland wineries or even our favorite winery in Virginia near Shenandoah National Park? So without further adieu, here’s a list of some of our favorite wineries in MD which are kid-friendly.
Rocklands Farm Winery
Located in Montgomery County, MD, only 30 mins away from DC, Rocklands Farm Winery offers a large outdoor space with picnic tables along the pond as well as a huge play area for kids. This one should be on your list of kid-friendly wineries. In addition to great wines, Rockland Farms offers various meat selections and farm-to-table style food is available in their marketplace.
Windridge Vineyards
Here’s another great winery with lots of open spaces – Windridge Vineyards. Bring your own picnic mat if you want to enjoy a nice time down the vineyard away from the seating area. The best time to visit here would be sunset as you enjoy a glass of wine and watch the golden hour. This place is located in Montgomery County and is a roughly 50-minute drive from DC.
Elk Run Winery
Elk Run Winery and Vineyards is a winner of several Statewide wine competitions and home to a historic house built in 1756. Located in Frederick County, MD, this one is a perfect place to get cozy with friends and family or an even better candidate to host a private event such as a small wedding. We hosted our kids first birthday party here last month! It’s about an hour and twenty minutes drive from DC.
Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyards
Sugarloaf Mountain is a popular hiking trail in Maryland and if you come here for a hike then what’s a better way to end the day than stopping at the winery. Even if you are not an avid hiker, come here to enjoy the gorgeous views of the rolling hills from Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyards in Montgomery County which is only 30 mins away from DC.
Catoctin Breeze Vineyard
Talking about wineries in Frederick County, MD, Catoctin Vineyards has been voted as Frederick’s best winery. It not only offers interesting hand-crafted Maryland wines but also has a huge outdoor space to enjoy your wine with a view of rolling hills and vineyards. They also offer outdoor events throughout summer and fall such as live music, food, and yoga. It is about an hour and fifteen minutes drive from DC.
Springfield Manor Winery
Also located in Frederick County, Springfield Manor is a 3 in 1 – Winery, Brewery, and Distillery which is only an hour away from DC. Actually, it is even more than that, there is also a lavender field which opens every year in June. They have an Inn at Springfield Manor which has 8 classic rooms if you want to spend the night. They host live music and food truck so you have a wonderful time while you are wine tasting.
There are many other wineries on our list, but we hope this post was helpful.
