Best of 2017 – Travel Memories and Inspiration Around the World

Last updated on August 31st, 2024 at 04:07 pm

A very happy and adventurous New Year to all our readers! We sincerely hope that 2018 brings a lot of amazing travelogues and memories for all of us.

As we plan and onboard our adventurous travel plans for this year, we wanted to take some time to look back and reflect on how amazing last year was for us. Not only did last year take us to some far-off places, but it was also the year we started shaping up this blog with all seriousness. So let’s just say, as we learned a lot about new cultures and countries, we also learned a heck lot about the technical back end of writing a blog. And in case you have no idea, that is an awful lot of work which we underestimated. And guess what? We’ve come to love it! This means you can expect a lot more awesome content this year 🙂

For all those reading Myticklefeet – Thank you for motivating and inspiring us to continue writing. This post is one for our books… and one for your travel bucket list!

So here you go, looking back on our top travel memories from 2017 in chronological order. We hope this list inspires your 2018 travel goals.

CAIRNS & SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

After ending the year by swimming in the Great Barrier Reef in Cairns, we could not have asked for a better NYE than Sydney. Bringing in the New Year on a beach, watching Sydney’s famous fireworks over Harbor Bridge was better than any of the NYE parties we have ever attended.

CA HIGHWAY 1 ROAD TRIP, USA – WEST COAST

Driving on California’s Highway 1 from SF to LA had always been a long-time bucket list for me. I was finally able to do that with my girlfriends in spring. Although we had a few hiccups with the Big Sur area being closed due to landslides, we managed to swing by some unexpected towns instead, like San Luis Obispo and Solvang in Central CA. I’d really hope to come back and drive this stretch with Gaurav someday, passing through Big Sur.

GERMANY CASTLES

Not only did we enjoy gallons of beer in Munich early in the summer, but we also took a day trip to see some famous castles nearby the town of Schwangau. Seeing the dreamy Neuschwanstein Castle, which inspired Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle was like walking through a fairytale. Talking about dreams, thankfully, not many people were around to watch me run towards the castle on the hill like a kid on the field of wildflowers. From the Alps to the crystal clear lake below the castle, everything was surreal about this place. Read more about our experience of visiting the castles in Germany.

SALZBURG, AUSTRIA

We traced the scenic Austrian countryside landscape around Salzburg from the iconic movie Sound of Music without the tours. Enjoyed Mozart’s music while exploring the old town of Salzburg. Learned about the history of Salzburg, the original town of white gold – Salt, at the Salt mines near the city. Slid down the Alpine slopes on a toboggan and spent a day in the gorgeous little town of Hallstatt. Our short, long weekend trip to Austria was one of a kind experience.

SEOUL, S. KOREA

Seoul was a pleasant surprise and definitely off the beaten path for me. But I am so grateful to have made a stopover in this beautiful city and country. Explored Seoul, from palaces to Hanok villages and from shopping to street food, embracing a unique culture. And then, who would have thought we would end up having so much fun getting dirty in a mud festival in a town called Boryeong?

KYOTO & HIROSHIMA, JAPAN

Although Tokyo was fascinating in many ways, my personal favorite was meeting a Geisha and walking down the streets of Gion in Kyoto. For Gaurav getting the opportunity to visit Hiroshima in Japan was a big check on his bucket list. We, however, need to return to give our regards to Fuji San as we couldn’t get to meet him this time, blame the bad cloudy weather. You can read about what to expect on your first time in Japan in our recent post.

WEST VIRGINIA, USA- EAST COAST

As Autumn was kicking in, so was our adventure in chasing nature’s colors. We had an adventurous weekend driving down the hilly country roads of West Virginia. With no cellular network and cars zooming by us as if it was the F1 circuit, I have to admit it was a little nerve wracking after dark. But with a stay in one of the remotest farmhouses ever, this turned out to be one of our autumn weekend getaways of 2017. Also, since we are on the East Coast, we spent the majority of December exploring Christmas decorations around Washington, DC.

INDIA

And then, finally, we ended the year with a quick dash to one of the 7 new wonders of the world. Although we both had seen the Taj Mahal many years ago, it was our first time visiting here as a couple.  Seeing Taj at sunrise and then coming back to see it from a different spot at sunset was very special. A post on all the things to see in Agra is in the works soon.

In conclusion, 2017 took us to different corners of the world, teaching us a lot about ourselves as we adapted to different cultures and people. We hope to continue this trend in 2018 and we wish the same for all of you guys as well. Looking forward to hearing more of your travel stories this year 🙂

Happy Traveling in 2018!
