The Alps might attract skiers and snowboarders in the winter but have you ever heard of sliding down the Alp on your summer holiday? You will now! And what’s more, it’s an easy day trip from Salzburg combined with Hallein Salt Mine tour.
Gaurav and I are always looking for exciting adventures on our travels so it goes without saying that we not only added Salzburg to our Munich long weekend trip but we also added a little thrill in the Alps. Thanks to Rick Steves, we found our perfect match in the Alpine slides and can’t wait to tell you all about it.

What is Keltenblitz Alpine Slide All About?
Keltenblitz near Salzburg offers a summer toboggan run on the Alps in Austria.
What is a Toboggan Slide or Run?
Here’s how I’ll explain – you are seated on a small carriage which looks like a toy stick shift car and it rolls down the mountain on single track. In other words, it’s like a mini roller coaster ride. But in this case, you control the speed of the car yourself. Keltenblitz summer toboggan is the longest alpine slide in Salzburg region.

How to Get to the Salzburg Alpine Slide?
It’s an easy 30-minute drive from Salzburg to the toboggan ride’s parking lot. TIP: Keltenblitz is located very close to Hallein Salt mines which makes it a perfect getaway from Salzburg for both adventures.
Toboggan Ride Adventures on Austrian Alps
You’ll have an option to buy a single run or a double run ticket. After we came down sliding we were wishing we had bought two rounds. Just saying!
Going On Top of the Hill
There is an option of hiking up to the top or you can use the ski chairlifts to get up like we did. It feels awkward to hop on these lifts without skis on your feet and snow on the ground. But once you take off it is a beautiful ride to the top. Although the website says it’s a 15-minute ride, it felt like a good 30-minute or more as we went up. The best part about going up is to watch others slide down the mountain from the chairlifts.
At the Mountain Top
Once you reach the top, you can take your time exploring the beauty around. There are some smaller hikes you or grab a drink at the mountaintop restaurant. With views like these from the restaurant’s patio, why rush to come down?
Sliding Down the Alpine Coaster
Now comes the thrill – when you stand in the line to be seated in one of these toy carts. The stick shift in the center is how you control the speed by pulling it towards you or away from you. TIP: Highly recommend going a few minutes after the person in front of you have left as you don’t want to be stuck bumper to bumper. The whole point is to enjoy the ride with the thrill of speed. Which also means if you go too slow then you might be ruining the experience for the person behind you. Remember there is no take over lane here!
TIP: In order to take a good video or photos, make sure to have your GoPro connectors or a tight grasp on your phone.
The photos are not even doing justice to the Austrian summer adventure we had. But we hope this post has given you enough excitement to go and do this for yourself! Now if you are visiting in the winter, you must check out this guide to best ski places in Austria.
Hope you enjoyed this post. Don’t forget to share it with someone who is going to Salzburg soon 🙂

Yeah, and the best part is this time of the year wasn’t crowded on the slopes!
Wow this looks like a real adventure. I am definetly going to try this one when we visit Alps. Thanks for sharing !
You must Madhu!! It’s such a fun experience, I am sure other cities might have it too if you aren’t heading to Salzburg per say.
This sounds terrifying! I would never do it lol!
That’s exactly what my husband said!!! And he was going down so slow that I almost lost him with my speedy adventure. But when we both reached the bottom, he was the one who wanted to go back 😉 So… there’s an inspiration for you!
